Rickard Borgström [FI]

Curator | Performance Maker | Critic | Dramaturge

Based in Sibbo, Finland, Rickard Borgström works at the intersection of contemporary art, dance, and theatre. He creates transdisciplinary exhibitions and programs that engage with local contexts through collaborative and decentralized approaches.

Since 2021, his choreographic research has focused on a more-than-human shared practice, with particular attunement to plant life in forested environments. Drawing from Karelian lamenting traditions and ecology, Borgström explores the resonances between human and non-human bodies through movement and sound, emphasizing the relationality between humans, plants, and the wider ecology.

The core of his artistic and curatorial research investigates dance and art within more-than-human worlds, focusing on how the body is part of and interrelates with the biosphere. This ontological shift in perception calls for new modes of creating art and influences how we choose to organize our lives.

His work has been presented across the Nordic region at institutions such as Rosendal Teater, MDT – Moderna Dansteatern, and Rovaniemi Art Museum. Borgström writes for publications including Norsk Shakespearetidskrift and Ny Tid.

Together with Rebecca Chentinell, he co-facilitates DACE – Dance Art Critical Ecology, producing exhibitions and performances such as "Symbiosis – Erotics" (Färgfabriken, 2021), "Bergspråk" (Havremagasinet, 2022), and "Hämärän Maa – Nattens Ekologi" (Rovaniemi Art Museum, 2023). DACE also produced "Le Sacre du Printemps – Tandvärkstallen" by Zheng Bo for the 2022 Venice Biennale and facilitated the eco-sensitivity practice for Zheng's exhibition "Långsamhetens vällust" (Göteborgs Konsthall, 2024).

Borgström holds an MA in Performance Art & Choreography from ArtEZ University of the Arts (Netherlands), a Magister in Aesthetics, Dramaturgy, and Pedagogy from Dramatiska Institutet/Stockholm University of the Arts, and has studied Art History and Pedagogy at Stockholm University.

DACE – Dance Art Critical Ecology

DACE is a learning site for explorations on dance and art in more-than-human worlds, initiated by Rickard Borgström and Rebecca Chentinell in 2019. DACE explores dance and art within more-than-human worlds, focusing on how the body is part of and interrelates with the biosphere. This ontological shift in perception calls for new modes of creating art and influences how we choose to organize our lives. Consequently, DACE invites artists who engage in the rapid technological, environmental, and political changes, with a multitude of bodily approaches, and how this might affect our actions, thinking, and artistic practice.

DACE traces new bodily sensitivities and interconnections between human, technology and nature in a more-than-human environment. DACE seeks new aesthetic paradigms in the shifting nature of our ecological systems in the geological era of human-made nature. For more information: dace.nu
